Amy Grant is opening up about her 26-year marriage to fellow country star Vince Gill.
“I couldn’t un-know his kindness,” Grant recently said. “All I know to say is I couldn’t un-know what it felt like to feel that kind of respect.”
Grand and Gill met in 1993 on the set of Gill’s televised holiday special, Christmas With Vince Gill, when they were both married, but obtained divorces and made their relationship official in 2000.
Amy Grant and Vince Gill’s love story is one for the ages.
The six-time Grammy winner opened up about her 26-year marriage to Gill on the Sept. 1 episode of the Human School podcast.
“With Vince, we got together because he was the kindest person I had ever met, and I was so attracted to him. I fell in love with him. I couldn’t un-know his kindness,” Grant gushed. “We worked together, and I was married, he was married, and all I know to say is I couldn’t un-know what it felt like to feel that kind of respect.”

Grant and Gill had already achieved major successes in their respective careers when they met during the production of Gill’s 1993 holiday special Christmas With Vince Gill. The two sang a duet of Grant’s 1983 song “Tennessee Christmas,” and according to Grant, it was love at first sight.
“It’s so weird to say, but it tilted my world on its axis — mostly his kindness and his authenticity — and it was kind of a long five years of slowly derailing for both of us, and then we married seven years later, after we worked together,” she explained.
At the time, Grant was married to the Christian musician and talk show host Gary Chapman, with whom she wrote “Tennessee Christmas.” Gill, meanwhile was married to Janis Oliver, one half of the sister duo Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Within six years, both Grant and Gill had obtained divorces from their respective partners, and in 2000, they married.

“I would just say that marriage is the giant rock tumbler, and everybody’s unique,” Grant noted. “And I think we all get married because we’ve projected so many amazing things on another person, and there are always amazing things there, but they’re not always what we projected. So it’s been such a great experience of sort of navigating another human being.”
Though the couple’s “lives are beside each other,” the “physical things that have happened to me, they have not happened to him. The opportunities that have come to him have not come to me. And just that respect I felt in him from the beginning has been one of the most wonderful things to learn to live respectfully beside somebody else.”
Grant’s 20th studio album, The Me That Remains, was released in May, while Gill was honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Country Music Association Awards.
