The year was 1972 and the Vietnam War showed no signs of ending any time soon. Bergen and Garr were two of the estimated 111 people who protested in the U.S. Capitol by laying down in a Senate corridor, known as a "die-in," which is a misdemeanor.
"We were put in a paddy wagon and taken to jail and booked," Bergen, 80, recalled on *The Run-Through With Vogue*, a podcast hosted by her daughter Chloe Malle, the magazine's editor-in-chief. "Then we were in a jail cell in Washington, D.C. for longer than I would've thought."
While locked up, the two budding actresses were chatty, which apparently broke the rules. But Garr was determined to get the last laugh.
"The prison matron was telling us to be quiet and she said, 'Who does your hair?'" Bergen revealed with a smile. "She just gave [Garr] a *look*."

At the time, Bergen had gained national notoriety as a fashion model, actress, and the daughter of ventriloquist-comedian Edgar Bergen. So when the protest was reported in newspapers, the 26-year-old was one of the boldface names printed in black and white, along with *Midnight Cowboy* star Jon Voight, pediatrician-author Dr. Benjamin Spock, and Yale University professor of psychiatry Dr. Richard Lifton.
"111 Foes of War Arrested in Capitol As Hall Is Blocked," read *The New York Times* headline on June 28, 1972. Bergen was noted as one of the antiwar protestors who "blocked a hallway outside the Senate chamber this afternoon."

Garr, who had only made minor appearances on *The Andy Griffith Show* and *Star Trek*, was not mentioned in any of the newspapers at the time.
But two years later, she’d break through with the Mel Brooks comedy *Young Frankenstein* opposite Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, and Gene Hackman.
