Clint Black Reveals Wife Lisa Hartman Experienced 4 Pregnancy Losses Before Daughter Lily: 'We Got Through It Together' (Exclusive)

In his new memoir, Clint Black reveals he and wife Lisa Hartman Black experienced four pregnancy losses before welcoming their daughter Lily in 2001

Black tells PEOPLE that they leaned on each other during the painful journey and kept their struggles private to maintain hope

Now, the country singer supports Lily as she pursues a music career and credits her with inspiring him to embrace new experiences

Before Clint Black and his wife, Lisa Hartman Black, welcomed their only daughter Lily, the couple experienced some fertility issues.

In the country star's upcoming memoir Killin' Time: My Life and Music, he recounts the moment he and Lisa decided it was time to expand their family — and reveals that they experienced four pregnancy losses.

Speaking with PEOPLE in this week's issue, the "A Good Run of Bad Luck" singer, 64, expands on that experience — and says they "got through it together."

"We encouraged each other when we needed it," he says of Lisa, 69, whom he married in 1991. "It was a painful, scary time. Something we wanted was seemingly less and less attainable."

He continues, "So this just creates a little bit of turmoil, but we had each other to lean on."

Reflecting on their decision to keep the pregnancy losses private at the time, Black says they wanted to "keep hope alive." Now, talking about it as a thing of the past "isn't as difficult," he says.

After the pregnancy losses, Black and Lisa, who is a singer and actress, welcomed Lily on May 8, 2001. The "Walkin' Away" singer remembers that day as "exhaustingly joyful."

"It was so great that it just beats everything. And the joy of it, it would just wear us out," he says.

Now, Black is guiding Lily as she paves her own career in music — and she encourages him to film videos for social media.

"She'll get me to do things that no one else would get me to do. We just taped four things for a funny video that I could never have imagined doing. I came up with some of the silliness myself," he says.

Black adds, "Lisa couldn't believe I was willing to do it. That's what a kid will do. I knew when she was born, I'm going to live a different kind of life than I've been living."
