Constance Wu told PEOPLE she always makes an effort to arrange playdates with costars who also have children

The actress, who shares two kids with partner Ryan Kattner, said the playdates do more than help entertain the little ones

Constance Wu says she sets up playdates with “every costar” who also has kids — and it’s for a surprisingly strategic reason.

Wu, 44, recently caught up with PEOPLE at the opening night of A Few Good Men at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City on Oct. 29. During the conversation, the mom of two shared that she’s a big fan of planning playdates with co-workers.

“I set up playdates with every costar I work with,” the actress said. “I was just doing press for [the TV series] The Terminal List, and Tom Hopper — we did a lot of scenes together —  I was doing playdates with him and his kids.”

“We were going to the playground in the water park. You know those water parks that they have in the playground? I remember Tom was walking around in this water park with his shirt off, and all the moms are like, ‘Oh my God.’ And all the dads are like, ‘Oh my God.’ ‘Cause he’s like ripped,” she added with a laugh.

Wu went on to say that the group hangouts do more than keep her kids entertained.

“It actually is a really great way to bond [with costars] because it’s something that — no matter what your background is — we all understand what it’s like to really love your kids, and to raise them and wanna do the best you can. So it’s a really good unifying thing,” she explained.

The Fresh Off the Boat alum shares a daughter, 6, and a son, 3, with her longtime partner, musician Ryan Kattner, who performs under the name Honus Honus and fronts the band Man Man.

The couple welcomed their daughter in August 2020, but news of her arrival didn’t become public until several months later. Wu was similarly private about the birth of their son, revealing in July 2023 that she had quietly welcomed her second child.

While speaking to PEOPLE at the recent theater event, Wu shared that she’s excited to reunite with her Crazy Rich Asians costar Henry Golding for the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians television series — especially because they’re both parents now.

“We are filming next year here in New York City. I’m actually very excited to see Henry because I think the last time I saw him, neither of us had kids. And now, between the two of us, we have four kids. He’s got two girls, I’ve got a boy and a girl,” she said.

“He’s just such a sweetheart,” she continued, adding that while she’s seen a few members of the cast and creative team since wrapping the 2018 film, parenthood has made keeping up with friends and former colleagues a challenge.

“Once you become a parent of little ones, your social life kind of goes away,” Wu said.

The star revealed that fans of the original movie can expect to see a number of familiar faces in the series, including Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng.

“I’ve read some scripts and some of the other characters are definitely in those scripts,” Wu told PEOPLE. “They’re not series regulars, so they might not be in every episode, but the ones I’ve read, they are in there. So I think fans will be very excited about that. It’ll be kind of a fun treat every time you find out, ‘Oh, this person’s gonna be in it, and this person’s gonna be in it.’ So I’m excited.”

HBO confirmed that it had ordered an eight-episode sequel to the hit romantic comedy in October. An official premiere date has not yet been set for the series.
