However, the hat he chose to promote Lake America quickly became a blank canvas for online mockery. Users on X (formerly Twitter) altered the slogan in several ways, turning a family photo-op into another round of criticism aimed at the Trump administration.

Eric shared the image on X while wearing merchandise from the Trump Store, proudly displaying the new name Donald Trump gave Lake Ontario. The president announced the switch last week, despite the Great Lake sitting along both the United States and Canada (via The Daily Beast).

The internet wasted little time getting creative with the hat. Some users replaced “Lake America” with references to the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and Donald Trump’s past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Other edits used several harsh phrases, while another simply restored the lake’s actual name to “Lake Ontario.” Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing involving Epstein.

Eric himself also became the target of separate edits. One altered the hat with an insult aimed at him, while another referenced reports involving his charitable foundation and businesses. Those reports alleged that money intended to help children with cancer passed through companies connected to Eric Trump.

Public opinion was hardly on board with the proposed Lake Ontario makeover. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found that only 14% of Americans viewed changing the lake’s name favorably, showing just how divisive the move had become. Trump nevertheless pushed ahead on his own, which created fresh friction in an already tense relationship with Canada.

The lake is also far from the only geographic name Trump has targeted. In 2025, he directed officials to use “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico. His administration has also attached his name to Washington institutions, including the Kennedy Center and the Institute of Peace. More recently, Trump floated yet another idea on Truth Social, suggesting the Strait of Hormuz could someday be called the “Trump Strait.”
