The *Girl Next Door* star Elisha Cuthbert reveals that not everything was “as it seems” when it comes to her limousine sex scene with Emile Hirsch.

The 2004 comedy focused on Matthew Kidman (Hirsch), a high school senior who falls for Danielle (Cuthbert), the attractive young woman who moves in next door. Matthew soon learns that Danielle is a former adult film star. Late in the movie, after successfully shooting a sex ed video during prom, the two get intimate in a limo, which wasn’t as sexy to make as it was to watch.

“Because it was in the back of the limousine, my side of it filming was literally with a square little box; with no Emile, no interaction with him at all, just the camera and this box,” she shared on *Teen Beat*. “For Emile, he was on the other side of it and then just kind of looking up into camera. So you have to really put yourself out there and go for it. And it’s not always the most comfortable situation, and it’s not always as it seems when you’re watching the film.”

After breaking out as Kim Bauer on *24*, Cuthbert was just 20 when she landed the role of Danielle in *The Girl Next Door*, which, at the time, was her biggest film role yet. As memorable as her performance was, Cuthbert admits that she’d “have more confidence” taking on the highly sexualized role today.

“Even though the role wouldn’t be right for me now, I would have had more confidence doing that role at 43 than I did at 20, which probably seems weird to people,” she told *Teen Beat*. “At 20, it felt like such a departure from my confidence and womanhood that I really felt like I was doing a great acting job.”

She continued, “I was like, this is such a departure, but I think people were like, ‘Oh, of course, that’s how you should look and feel.’ I remember it was a lot of hair and makeup, a lot of smoke and mirrors. I mean, luckily, I was 20, so it was a good time to be doing that part. But I don’t know if I could be in those outfits again!”

Cuthbert can currently be seen in the Prime Video series *Every Year After*, marking the end of a years-long acting break.
