Matt Dawson, an extreme athlete and philanthropist, died on Aug. 15 during a mountaineering expedition.
Dawson’s family shared in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Sept. 1, that he “made his final climb” while attempting to summit Ismoil Somoni Peak, a mountain in Tajikistan. However, he suffered a “tragic accident” during the climb.
According to the athlete’s website, Dawson, who was born in 1978, walked away from a lengthy career in finance after the death of his mother and girlfriend to pursue a passion for extreme sports, undertaking mountain climbing, polar and desert travel and oceanic rowing expeditions around the world.
Per his website, he held nine world records for his athletic achievements — most recently achieving a Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of the Mojave Desert on foot in May 2024.
In 2018, Dawson founded Dawson’s Peak Foundation, a charity that hosts adventure projects around the world alongside sponsored athletes with the goals of inspiring individuals to see themselves in athletes.
Earlier this summer, Dawson embarked on a three-peak challenge — attempting to summit Ismoil Somoni Peak, Ozodi Peak and Manaslu — as a fundraiser for the ALS Network. He had been inspired by his friend, Broadway star Aaron Lazar, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022.

“The ALS Network is heartbroken by the passing of our friend and supporter, Matt Dawson, who died while pursuing his latest mountaineering expedition in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan,” the organization wrote in a tribute shared on Aug. 24.
“We are profoundly grateful that Dawson chose to carry the ALS community with him on this journey. His commitment, generosity, and determination touched our organization and so many people who followed and supported his remarkable efforts,” the tribute continued. “Our hearts are with Dawson‘s family, loved ones, friends, and fellow adventurers during this devastating time. We join everyone who knew and admired him in mourning an extraordinary life and honoring the impact he made.”

Dawson was also remembered by his friend, actor AJ Buckley, who recounted meeting the athlete over two decades prior and becoming “fast friends.”

“He was the type of friend who never missed a beat,” he added. “If you were his friend and you had an important day, he was there. Sometimes he’d just show up unannounced and be present for the moment. That was Dawson.”
