Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election as Fifa president amid the World Cup controversy that triggered a crisis in the global game.

Infantino has been under intense pressure to stand down after his scrapped plan to sell stakes in Fifa competitions to private investment.

Uefa threatened to boycott the World Cup and is taking legal action against Fifa, whose president, Infantino, has been in the role since 2016.

“The Fifa president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” read a Fifa statement.

“Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”

The comments mark the first time Fifa said he will aim to continue as president in the wake of the scandal. No other candidates to challenge Infantino have emerged at present, with the deadline for nominations November 18.
