James Talarico, who helped lead Democratic Party upsets in the Republican stronghold of Texas with his U.S. Senate race victory Tuesday, made a surprise appearance to help kick off the latest episode of âSaturday Night Live.â
The state lawmaker and seminarian defeated GOP state Attorney General Ken Paxton as Democrats secured majorities in the House and Senate and celebrated Gina Hinojosaâs similar upset win against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.
SNLâs cold open featured New Yorkâs Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (played by Kenan Thompson) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (Sarah Sherman) celebrating Tuesdayâs wins, which helped to set up Jeffries as the likely House speaker in January.
Shermanâs Schumer introduced the pair as âestablishment Democratsâ and asked, âDo we even know how to lose?â
Thompsonâs Jeffries answered: âYes.â Still, he suggested a toast to victory.
âWe flipped the House, we flipped the Senate, and how did we do it?â he said.
âMe!â said a party crasher, President Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson.
He called the Democratsâ victory wave a âblue Toonami,â referring to Cartoon Networkâs late-night block of anime shows, and he indicated he wouldnât challenge the midterm electionâs results.
âI accepted the results, which is almost scarier in a way,â he said. âItâs like, âWhat the hell is he planning?â Iâll tell you what Iâm planning: Ballroom.â

Trump said he hopes voters enjoy the results of the election, including the victory in Texas by the man he calls âTalafreako.â
The real Talarico then moved into the spotlight in front of Trump to loud applause from the showâs New York City studio audience.
âHi, America,â he said. âIâm James Talarico, the guy whoâs been texting you every day asking for $5.â
Trump responded, âIn this economy, who can blame you?â
Talarico, who campaigned on battling wealth disparity and political corruption, suggested working with the Republican president to âmake life better for everyday Americans.â
âItâs clear people want something new,â the senator-elect said. âThey want something different. Iâm talking of course, about SNLâs cold opens.â
He suggested voters were tired of the comedy showâs political cold-open sketches, asking, âHow many of these Trump freezers are they going to do?â
âInfinity,â Trump responded.
Both then joined voices in uttering the showâs trademark introduction, âLive from New York ... â
âSNLâ airs on NBC, a division of NBCUniversal, which is also the parent company of NBC News.
