A Kennedy family home located just minutes away from their famous Hyannis Port, Mass. compound has hit the market for $1.6 million.
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland and eldest daughter of the late Robert F.. and Ethel Kennedy, has listed her charming five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Cape Cod residence.
“I had a dream that I would recreate the youth, the wonderful youth that I had, for my children and grandchildren, so they could come to the Cape; they could sail, they could walk on breakwater, and it would be, you know, wonderful summers,” the mother of four, including late daughter Maeve, tells the Boston Globe.

“I wanted it to be a place where you could have a number of people enjoy themselves and use the beach and be in a safe place,” she said.
However, she says her family has not been drawn to the Cape like she was, and she is now selling the home. “I had this wonderful dream,” she says. “But not all dreams work, right?”

Inside, the foyer splits into two with stairways going up and down. Upstairs, a 286-square-foot living room stretches across the front of the home and features a gas fireplace framed by white wood. A wide doorway opens to a combined dining and kitchen. From there, a 305-square-foot rear deck can be reached via sliding glass doors.

“For a family that lives in Boston or Providence, or any place close, it's just ideal,” Kennedy Townsend says of the property.
The Kennedy family's connection to Hyannis Port dates back to 1926 when 38-year-old millionaire Joseph P. Kennedy and his wife Rose rented a summer house on the south shore of Cohasset, according to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum's website. In 1928, he purchased Hyannisport Club's large Malcolm Cottage for $25,000 after renting it for two years.

Years later, in 1956, former President John F. Kennedy bought his own home just behind his father's, which overlooked a property owned by his brother, Robert and Robert's wife Ethel. Together the three properties made up the famous Kennedy compound.
