King Charles is said to be pleased that his grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have returned to live in the UK, according to a former royal butler.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved back to Britain last week, representing their first time living in the UK in six years following their departure from royal duties.

While the monarch has made no public statement regarding his younger son's return to Britain, he is said to be content that Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, will now be geographically closer to him. Prior to this summer, the monarch had not seen his two grandchildren since 2022.

This situation would have been "hard for him" to manage, according to a former royal butler. In an interview with The Daily Express this week through Press Box PR, Grant Harrold - who served King Charles from 2004 to 2011 during his tenure as The Prince of Wales - characterized the monarch as a "caring man" who would never have wished to be an "absent grandparent."

Offering his perspective on the King's likely emotions, Harrold stated, "Like any grandparent, the King will be very excited to have Archie and Lilibet close again.

"He hasn't had a chance to really see them grow up, so he will be very happy to play a larger role in their lives. I imagine it's been very hard for him to know how much he's missed out on. He would never have wanted to be an absent grandparent."

Harrold added, "He's a very caring man and his family means a lot to him. All things aside, he would want to play an active role in his grandchildren's lives. He wouldn't want them growing up having questions, so this move is very important to the King."

It remains unclear whether the monarch has been able to meet with the family since their return to Britain last week.

The couple and their children are living in a private, non-royal, rented UK property, with the address being kept confidential for security purposes.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have been registered at a British school and are expected to start this month.

Harry and Meghan took their children to meet with Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in July. Buckingham Palace described the meeting at the King's private home in Gloucestershire as a "private family occasion."

It was the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in more than four years. The Sussex family had not been in the UK together as a whole since Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, with Harry and Meghan returning later that year for her funeral.
