Mandy Moore tells PEOPLE she prioritizes her marriage to Taylor Goldsmith alongside their parenting duties
The couple follows a “two-week rule” to avoid long separations and schedules regular date nights to stay connected

Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith have been married for eight years and together for over a decade in total. What keeps their relationship going strong?
The singer and actress is opening up about her marriage to the Dawes musician — with whom she shares three kids: sons August “Gus” Harrison, 5, and Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett, 3, as well as daughter Louise “Lou” Everett, 23 months — as she partners with ABCmouse for the kids’ education app’s back-to-school campaign.
“We are a priority,” Moore tells PEOPLE of her and Goldsmith, who tied the knot in November 2018 after getting engaged the previous year.

“Obviously, the kids are always going to be a priority,” she says, “but our marriage is just as much of a priority because if we’re able to be an aligned unit, I think it makes us just better parents, better partners, better for each other, better for everybody.”
“We try to not both be working at the same time,” adds the This Is Us alum. “He’s had a crazy, busy summer with touring and recording and stuff, so I’ve been home kind of holding down the fort here.”

Moore explains, “He doesn’t like to be away for more than two weeks at a time, but even two weeks now feels like a long time.” So, in addition to the “two-week rule,” the spouses are “making sure that we are scheduling in a date night every now and then.”
Luckily, they have some help to make that happen. “My mother-in-law lives pretty close to us, which is so nice,” says Moore. “So tonight, we’re going to put the kids down and we’re going to go have a little date. Our favorite restaurant is down the street, so we feel less guilty about that.”
Locking down time for the pair to “connect and chat” is important for their relationship. “It keeps us engaged and both on the same page with everything,” says Moore.
The couple is sending Gus to kindergarten and Ozzie to preschool this season, while they still have another year at home with Lou — and Moore feels grateful to spend more time with her. “Because once you relinquish them to the school, that’s it. School has them until they’re in high school, and I’m like, ‘I’m not ready for that yet,’” she explains. “So, I’m holding on tight.”
