Marvel Rumored to Be Planning Its Next Big Mutant Move After X-Men

Marvel Studios may be planning another project centered on mutants. The Untitled Marvel X-Men Film is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2028.
Scooper James Mack recently claimed on X that a new MCU mutant series is currently in development. Mack wrote, “I’ve just learned that a series involving a mutant or a group of mutants is in development at Marvel Studios, currently planned for 2028.”
If the rumor is accurate, the series could allow Marvel to expand its mutant lineup across film and television. It could also give the studio a chance to introduce mutants outside the main X-Men lineup. However, Marvel has not announced the series or confirmed its reported 2028 release window.

Mack has not shared details about the characters involved or the story the series may explore. There are also no details about the cast, format, or whether the series would connect to Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie. For now, the reported claim should be treated as a rumor.

Marvel has already begun expanding its mutant presence in the MCU through recent and upcoming projects. Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduced Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink. Her appearance introduced the established X-Men character to the MCU ahead of the upcoming X-Men film.
Avengers: Doomsday is also expected to expand the MCU’s mutant presence. The film features several actors returning from the X-Men franchise, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Their involvement could help further establish how the X-Men and other mutants fit into the MCU.
The MCU has also established organizations that operate across timelines and realities. The Time Variance Authority was first introduced in Loki, where it monitored and managed events across different timelines. The organization later played a major role in Deadpool & Wolverine, which further connected the MCU to characters and elements from the X-Men franchise.
