New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel wants Christian Gonzalez in town for the long haul.
According to CLNS, Vrabel stated to the media before practice on Saturday that he desires to have a hand in the team finalizing a contract extension with Gonzalez amid lengthy negotiations between both parties.
“I don’t get involved in the negotiations, per se, but I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the situation resolved,” Vrabel said.

The Patriots' front office made an offer to Gonzalez to make him the highest paid cornerback in NFL history earlier this summer. Both parties saw Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon become the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history with the extension that he signed in August, but neither of those occurrences have led to a deal getting finalized between them.
With Week 1 of the season just four days away, Vrabel has communicated to Gonzalez that he is a player that the team wants to build around, which adds another layer to the back-and-forth regarding the deal getting done.
