Mike White talks about his appearance on Survivor's milestone 50th season

He tells PEOPLE, "The game is the game, but I felt like some of it creeped into real life," after being betrayed by a friend outside the game

The White Lotus creator also reveals that his tradition of having a Survivor cameo in the HBO hit will continue

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the March 18 episode of Survivor's 50th season.

Mike White's second shot at Survivor ended early.

The White Lotus creator and Emmy winner, 55, returned to the reality show's 50th season after previously being the runner-up of Survivor's 37th season. However, White had his torch snuffed by Jeff Probst in the March 18 episode. His exit came as a total blindside after being betrayed by Christian Hubicki, who previously voted for White to win on their previous David vs. Goliath-themed season and was friends with White outside the game, including making a cameo in The White Lotus season 3.

Speaking to PEOPLE from France, where the fourth season of his HBO hit will start filming soon, White reflects on being caught off guard by the vote, where his relationship with Hubicki stands now and if any reality stars will be checking into The White Lotus next season.

You seemed to have a good attitude about being voted out, but you also seemed very caught off guard. How were you feeling in that moment?

I was totally shocked. It was a classic blindside. I really thought my relationships were…it transcended the game. I figured it was Christian, ultimately, but at the beginning, I was like, "I don't even know where these votes are coming from!"

When did you know it was Christian who orchestrated your exit?

When he hugged me, I was like, "Oh, this is the hug of somebody trying to like" — It was a Judas hug. It was a "I'm sorry I stabbed you in the back" kind of hug.

Did you not have your bag with you when you were voted out?

No. They make you walk a lot with that bag, and I was exhausted. That day was so hellish. I was like, "You know what? I don't think I'm going to go home, but if I do go home, what do I want with this ratty crap that's been sitting on the beach?" I don't even understand what people want with those bags. I brought my dye, Shot in the Dark, I brought that in my pocket. But what am I going to do with a bag with my dirty crap? I never want to see that again.

All these months later, how is your relationship with Christian?

I mean, I haven't talked to Christian since we were on the island.

Really? Is that a change from your prior relationship?

Yes, that's a change. We were talking for weeks before about how we were going to play to the end, blah blah blah. I haven't heard from him, and I haven't seen him. I went to New York for the premiere, but there was a blizzard. There was a party I went to, but you know, we haven't run into each other.

Is there bad blood there?

The game is the game, but I felt like some of it creeped into real life. I felt like I was part of a very long con. I mean, if your friend doesn't tell you he had a baby. That's somebody, they're putting the game — it's like a secret reveal for the game.

He didn't have to take me out, but he took me out because he wanted to take me out.

Looking back now, was there anything you could have done to avoid being eliminated?

Honestly, if it was run in a sim lab, I would have made the same mistake 100 times. It was one of those things where it's like…I mean, Christian and I have gone on vacations together. There's been so many things we did together, talked, we're texting daily — and we were only out there two days on the same [beach]. Now I see it, but then, I would never have guessed it.

Do you feel like your friendship with Angelina put a target on your back?

Definitely. And also, I overplayed because I thought I was in good places with everybody. It's my own fault, but I don't know. It is what it is.

As a fan of the show, who from the season 50 cast surprised you the most when you got to know them?

I really loved my original tribe. I dug pretty much everybody. They're characters on the show, but you see why they're cast. Coach is obviously a character, but he's very warm, he's very funny. In his own way, he's very self-aware. Jonathan is a really cool, gentle soul as well as being this monster competitor. Charlie is great at everything he does. Dee, Tiffany and Kamilla are like stand-up comedy stars — they're all so funny. My original group, I loved. Then I got traded to this other tribe with people that were my good friends. It's funny — the vibe suddenly shifted. It was like, "Oh, this is stressful." You'd think it'd be easier, but it was the opposite.

Christian said on last night's episode that Ozzy was "definitely gunning for a White Lotus cameo." Did you get that vibe from anybody?

I definitely don't think Ozzy was doing that. Ozzy and I have been friends for over a decade, even longer than that. I honestly think that they're there to play Survivor. They put their lives on hold to play that game. Maybe some people were nice to me that maybe wouldn't — it's hard as being me to know what people would be like if I didn't have that. But I feel like it was a mixed bag.

Will there be any Survivor players on The White Lotus next season?

Yes.

Anything you can tease for season four?

We start shooting in a few weeks. The cast is finally coming together. Maybe at some point I'll announce the Survivor people, but I have to tell them first before I tell the world.

They don't know yet?

No. I'm pretty positive that they'll want to do it. Maybe.

You've done Survivor twice now, The Amazing Race, acted. Are you planning to stay behind the camera from now on?

You never know. When you're young, it's fun to be seen. As I get older, I want to be anonymous more. I want to be more private. It's not a strong impulse in me to participate that way. Doing Survivor is so fun, and if something fun comes along that I'm like, "That's such a cool life experience," I would do it, for sure.

You said ahead of the game that you wanted to have fun. Did you accomplish that goal?

No. Honestly, it's very stressful in the beginning. Survivor gets funner the deeper you go into the game. In the beginning, it's just pure deprivation. I'm the oldest guy out there, so each challenge, I was like, "Am I going to be the one to f--- this up?" The first time, the early part was hard too, but then I just got to the other side.

I think that's probably why the Christian thing bugs me — because everyone knows to go out early — you have to fill out all the paperwork. You have to do all the gnarly stuff that isn't fun that you don't see on the show. I had to do all that stuff, and I never really got to the fun part.

At the same time, I'm glad I did it. I feel grateful that I got to go out, for sure. I'm so glad to be part of the Survivor world. I'm so proud that I was able to come back. I wish I had done better, but now that the chapter's over, I look back and I'm like, "Wow, that's cool."
