Olivia Rodrigo addressed past rumors of a rivalry with Sabrina Carpenter, saying it’s ā€œall loveā€ between them

Fans speculated Rodrigo’s ā€œDrivers Licenseā€ and Carpenter’s ā€œSkinā€ were connected during a rumored love triangle with Joshua Bassett

Both stars have since found major success in music, with both stars having won Grammys

No grudges here!

It’s been several years since Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter were rumored to be part of a love triangle — but any suspected rivalry is all water under the bridge for the two pop stars.

ā€œI think she’s great. I’m so happy for all of her success too. I love the album she’s put out,ā€ Rodrigo, 23, said on the new cover of British Vogue. ā€œIt’s all love, though. I’ve talked to her many times.ā€

Rodrigo is thought to have written her breakthrough 2021 single ā€œDrivers Licenseā€ about her costar Joshua Bassett — and when he was later spotted with Carpenter, fans wondered if she was ā€œthat blonde girlā€ mentioned in the lyrics as a source of insecurity for Rodrigo.

Carpenter, 26, later released the song ā€œSkin,ā€ which fans speculated was a response to ā€œDrivers License.ā€ The song included the lyrics, ā€œMaybe you didn’t mean it/Maybe blonde was the only rhyme,ā€ and ā€œI wish you knew that even you can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in.ā€

In the years since, Rodrigo and Carpenter have been seen chatting at events and award shows, and even shared a hug at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Rodrigo reflected on her teenage years, when the drama with Carpenter peaked, to British Vogue, saying she looks at teenagers now and sees just how young they actually are.

ā€œSometimes I meet a 17 or an 18-year-old nowadays and I’m like, ā€˜Wow, you are such a baby.’ I can’t believe people were that mean to me,ā€ she said. ā€œI was going through a breakup, working a full-time job, making [Sour], a student in high school and taking, like, three AP classes. Looking back, I always think, ā€˜Wow, life will never be as hard as it was when I was 17.ā€™ā€

The Grammy winner is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated third album, which has yet to get a release date or title. It follows her second album Guts, which topped the charts upon its release in 2023.

ā€œIt was a creative challenge to write from a joyful place,ā€ she said. ā€œWhen you’re experiencing that you’re connected to someone, or feeling really good, you’re not in your head thinking about bittersweet poems!ā€

Carpenter, meanwhile, has also forged a successful career in pop music. She released her breakthrough sixth album Short n’ Sweet in 2024, and followed the record with Man’s Best Friend last year.
