Prince Harry’s old security habit resurfaced as his return to the UK brought fresh scrutiny to questions about protection. The Duke of Sussex reportedly “used to try to escape” his officers when he was younger, according to former royal butler Grant Harrold. The claim came during “The Royals Uncensored,” where panelists discussed Harry and Meghan Markle’s move back to Britain, their quieter arrival, and the debate around protection.

As per “The Royals Uncensored” YouTube segment uploaded on September 4, 2026, Grant Harrold discussed Prince Harry’s past attitude toward security. The former royal butler said it was “a very different time” when he worked around the family.
However, he said he remembered “the whole security thing.” Harrold recalled that Harry had “a close protection officer” and “a couple of backups” following him. He then said the Duke “used to try to avoid them.”
Meanwhile, Harrold gave a more specific example from royal life. He said, “He used to try to escape them.” The former butler added, “He didn’t want them around.” Harrold also claimed Harry would “disappear out the back of the house.”

According to him, officers would then ask, “Where’s he gone?” He also referenced a separate Tower Records outing near High Street Kensington, though he called it “a different story.”
Still, the comments landed differently because of the current UK return. Earlier in the discussion, Katie Nicholl moved the panel to security after referencing Harry’s recent quiet arrival. Cameron Walker said RAVEC and the Home Office decided protection based on “risk and the risk alone.” He also noted the public did not know the intelligence behind any risk assessment.
Marie Claire later reported Harrold’s same claim, saying Harry had recently moved back from California with Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet. For Prince Harry, security, and the UK return, the old anecdote took on new context amid a live debate over protection.
