South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has died following a "brief and sudden illness," according to an official announcement.

The politician passed away on Saturday evening, his office confirmed in a statement. "On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness," the statement read. "Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period."

As a prominent figure within the Republican Party, Graham had an estimated net worth of between $1.5 million and $3 million. His base annual salary as a senator was $174,000 - the standard rate for all members of the US Senate - with several assets contributing to his wealth. His death came just weeks after President Trump said Graham was in "big trouble" after he expressed his skepticism over the newly signed Iran deal.

Based on Graham's recent asset disclosures, Quiver Quantitative estimates his net worth to be $1.48 million. However, other financial estimators place his total valuation closer to $2 million to $3 million. The senator held roughly $414,000 in tracked, public traded assets, with his investments primarily concentrated in diversified mutual funds, corporate bond funds, and cash accounts rather than individual tech stocks.

Police scanner audio obtained by NBC News revealed that emergency responders were dispatched to his Washington DC residence on Saturday night following reports of a "cardiac arrest" at the address. He had been slated to appear on NBC News' Meet The Press on Sunday.

Bystanders near his residence when emergency personnel arrived captured photographs showing paramedics transporting someone on a stretcher toward an awaiting ambulance, reports the Express US.

Despite challenging Donald Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination and writing on X, "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed.......and we will deserve it," Graham became a devoted supporter of the MAGA movement after his defeat. During a tele-rally for Graham last month, Trump said, "He's outstanding. He's been at my side for a long time."

Referencing the 2016 contest, the president added, "After that fight was over, we were best of friends, and he's helped me as much as anybody in the Senate." Graham had been serving as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was running for a fifth Senate term in November.

Trump was quick to pay tribute to Graham in the early hours of Sunday morning, writing on TruthSocial: "Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Graham entered politics in 1994, initially serving as a Representative before becoming a senator in 2002. As a member of the US House in the 1990s, he backed policies aimed at isolating the country and limiting its missile and nuclear programs.

He also cheered on Trump's decision to strike nuclear sites last year and had been been a supporter of the latest conflict that started a few months ago. Tributes started flooding in after news of his death emerged.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster took to X to call Graham an "irreplaceable" politician. "The fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America - and a loyal and steadfast friend," he wrote.

"We grieve with Darline [Graham's sister], his family and his devoted staff. May God hold him gently in the palm of his hand. We shall not see his likes again."

The sparse statement by Graham's office, which did not explain his death, comes during a stretch of concern about a lack of transparency about lawmakers' health. Rep. Tom Kean Jr, a New Jersey Republican, was absent without explanation for months before returning to Congress and disclosing that he had been diagnosed with depression. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, was hospitalized weeks ago for undisclosed health reasons.

There have been claims, so far unconfirmed, that Graham suffered chest pain at his home in Washington, D.C. after returning from Ukraine. It has been claimed he suffered a cardiac arrest before his death.
