Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set to Break Domestic Box-Office Record Soon

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is preparing to spend its sixth consecutive weekend atop the domestic box office, but an even bigger milestone is now within reach.
The Sony and Marvel blockbuster has crossed $900 million in North America, making it only the second movie in history to reach that mark without adjusting for inflation. It now sits behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has held the domestic box-office record with approximately $936 million since its 2015 release.
Current projections have Brand New Day earning roughly $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend. If the movie continues performing at its current pace, Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man adventure should soon overtake The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
Its success extends far beyond North America. Brand New Day has earned more than $2.33 billion worldwide, placing it third on the global box-office chart. Only James Cameron’s Avatar and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame have earned more internationally. The film recently surpassed Avatar: The Way of Water.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day has shown remarkable staying power during a relatively quiet closing stretch of the summer movie season. New releases By Any Means and Onslaught are not expected to threaten its position at No. 1.
Holland could also occupy the top two spots at the box office this weekend. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also stars Holland, is projected to finish second with approximately $16.4 million over the extended weekend.
The Universal epic is expected to reach approximately $588.1 million domestically by Monday as it enters its eighth weekend in theaters.
Final Labor Day weekend totals will determine how much closer Brand New Day moves toward the domestic record. At this point, however, Spider-Man’s latest box-office victory appears less like a question of whether the record will fall and more like a question of when.
