Theo Burrell, an Antiques Roadshow star and cancer awareness advocate, has died at the age of 39.

Burrell’s family confirmed the news on Instagram on Saturday, July 11, with a heartfelt post. “It is with great sadness that I share the news that Theo passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday afternoon. Neither she nor her medical team foresaw this happening quite so quickly,” they said.

The family added, “She was an incredible person who fought hard for her family, friends and raising awareness of this cruel disease.”

In June 2022, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma. At that time, she was given 12 to 18 months to live and was told that her cancer was incurable.

Since then, however, Burrell was able to celebrate several milestones she never anticipated, including her son’s first day of school and her wedding to her husband, Alex, on March 28. On Instagram, she wrote that it “feels so nice to be husband and wife after all these years together.”

Back in March, Burrell participated in a video for the Department of Health and Social Care to advocate for more government-funded cancer research. “I am running out of treatment options and I will lose my life to this cancer,” Burrell said at the time. “There’s absolutely no doubt about it.”

Noting that she underwent brain surgery and 17 rounds of chemotherapy, Burrell added, “Things may be too late for me, but I definitely can make peace with that if I know that the situation’s gonna be better for future patients.”

In the announcement of Burrell’s death, her family also praised the cancer community for bringing her “so much comfort and strength in her darkest moments.”

They added that what Burrell wanted most was “for other people to find hope in her story. Hope that the statistics aren’t gospel and that one day they’ll be very different.”

Burrell served as a specialist on Antiques Roadshow starting in 2018. She was a ceramics and glass expert with Lyon & Turnbull auctioneers in Edinburgh, since in 2011, per the BBC.

After being diagnosed, she went on to become a patron of Brain Tumor Research in 2023.

Chief executive Dan Knowles told the BBC, “We are heartbroken that we have lost the phenomenal, determined and truly inspiring Theo Burrell to this devastating disease. She was always very open about her prognosis and knew from the outset her cancer was terminal but she was absolutely determined to make a difference for others. She constantly inspired us with how big her heart was and we will continue on our mission, driven by everything she taught us.”
