Jane Lynch, born 1960, Dolton, Illinois, is an American actress best known for her work on the series Glee.

In 1982, Lynch earned a bachelor’s degree in theatre, then moved to Chicago after completing a master’s in acting at Cornell University.

Lynch started in theater, then, after moving to Los Angeles, she began working in commercials and on TV shows. At that time, Lynch met director Christopher Guest, who cast her in many of his movies.

Her versatile character helped her play many different roles in other movies and TV shows, such as Two and a Half Men,  Julie & Julia, and The L Word.

“ I played ingénues, I played old ladies, I learned how to fence, to dance, to sing.” She once said.

Lynch has appeared in many television series, but her role in Glee as Sue Sylvester was one of the most famous.

“The character was a big deal. All the characters were a big deal. It kind of hit the psyche of America,” Lynch said.

In 2013, Lynch hosted the NBC game show Hollywood Game Night, and made her Broadway debut as Miss Hannigan in the revival of Annie.

Lynch has always been open bout her personality, and most importantly about being gay, which brought her some hard times and some of the best acting opportunities. “I’m an actor and when people started taking an interest in me, where they wanted to write about me, I didn’t say I wasn’t gay, so I never had that,” she once said.

She’s also an activist, and she uses her platform to raise awareness about several causes like LGBTQ+ rights, mental health, animals, and the environment.  In 2005, she was named one of Power Up’s “10 Amazing Gay Women in Showbiz.

In her 2011 memoir “Happy Accidents“, Lynch reveals her struggle to become comfortable with being gay, her issues with maintaining relationships, and her problems with alcoholism.
