Tom Holland discovered that even Spider-Man could be left on read. The actor laughed off an awkward attempt to connect with soccer superstar Erling Haaland, admitting the unanswered message was a humbling reminder that fame doesn’t open every door.
The amusing exchange came after Holland spotted the Manchester City striker during the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix in June. Inspired by the chance encounter, he decided to send Haaland a direct message inviting him to hang out, but never received a reply.

According to PEOPLE, Holland confirmed the story during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After Fallon asked whether he had really messaged the Norwegian forward, Holland admitted, “Yes. Yes, and I tell you what, that is exactly the type of humbling experience that is important for actors.”
The publication reported that Holland joked he expected at least some kind of response. “You’ll be like, ‘I’ll text him, I’ll take him to dinner,’ not even a response, not an excuse, not ‘I’m busy tonight, I’m playing football,’ nada,” he said.
Holland explained that he had been watching Lewis Hamilton race at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix when he spotted Haaland in a nearby hospitality suite. According to the outlet, the actor thought he would “shoot my shot” by sending the Manchester City star a message. He later laughed, “I never imagined I would talk about it on live television, but here we are.”

The conversation also turned to England’s 2-1 World Cup victory over Norway, which knocked Haaland’s side out of the tournament. When Fallon asked whether dinner was still possible, Holland joked, “I don’t think he would have dinner with me after the other day,” before adding, “A little bit, bless him.”
Despite the unanswered DM, there were clearly no hard feelings. People reported that Holland praised Haaland’s performances, calling the striker “incredible” and “an absolute legend.”
The outlet also noted that Haaland recently said he wanted England to do well despite Norway’s elimination. The Manchester City forward explained that he had owned an England jersey before a Norway one as a child and described England as “a nice country” with “a nice T-shirt.”
