• Rupert Murdoch has six children from three marriages
• His children’s roles in his media empire are explored in the 2026 Netflix docuseries Dynasty: The Murdochs
• Lachlan Murdoch was named Rupert’s successor, while his siblings received $1.1 billion each in a family trust settlement
Rupert Murdoch is a father to six children: Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan, James, Grace and Chloe.
The media tycoon became a father when he and his first wife, Patricia Booker, welcomed daughter Prudence "Prue" in 1958. Rupert went on to marry his second wife, Anna Murdoch, in 1967, and together they welcomed daughter Elisabeth "Liz" in 1968 and sons Lachlan and James in 1971 and 1972, respectively.
Rupert expanded his family again in 2001 and 2003 when he and his third wife, Wendi Deng, had daughters Grace and Chloe, respectively.
Rupert's billion-dollar media empire and his children's desire to please him and potentially succeed him have been detailed in the docuseries Dynasty: The Murdochs, which came to Netflix on March 13. As seen in the docuseries, Rupert ultimately wanted Lachlan to run his media empire, so he went to court against his three older kids in an attempt to break the family trust and sell their shares in 2024.
Over a year after they began their contentious court battle, Rupert and his children reached an agreement that was announced on Sept. 8, 2025. The New York Times reported that Lachlan was officially named the successor, and his siblings, Prue, Liz and James, were set to receive $1.1 billion each for their shares, which were part of the original family trust that would be dissolved. A new one would be created in its place for Lachlan, Grace and Chloe.
Here's everything to know about Rupert Murdoch’s children.

Rupert and his first wife, Patricia Booker, welcomed their daughter Prudence "Prue" Murdoch in August 1958 in Adelaide, Australia.
Prue was raised away from the spotlight. Later, early in her career, she worked for News of the World, which was owned by her father, according to an expert from The Man Who Owns the News: Inside the Secret World of Rupert Murdoch, published in Vanity Fair.
However, the pair have had a history of discord. In 1997, Rupert delivered a press conference in which he referenced his "three children,” not including Prue," per the book. In one of her few public interviews, she admitted to “scream[ing] at him."
Then "he then sent the biggest bunch of flowers — it was bigger than a sofa — and two clementine trees," she reportedly recalled.
Prue has been married twice. She married London-based hedge fund manager Crispin Odey in 1986, and their union lasted about a year. Prue later married Alasdair MacLeod in 1989, and they welcomed three children: James, Angus and Clementine.

Rupert and his second wife, Anna Torv, welcomed Elisabeth "Liz" Murdoch on Aug. 22, 1968.
Liz grew up in New York and later attended Vassar College, according to The Man Who Owns the News. After graduation, she worked in various media roles, including within her father's company, but she also maintained her own ventures.
In 2001, she launched Shine, an independent television company which went on to produce reality shows like MasterChef. Ten years later, Rupert’s News Corp bought Shine in a $674 million deal, per Variety.
At the time, Liz joined the board at News Corp, but ultimately went her own way in 2019. Regarding the decision to work separately from her father, she told The New Yorker, "You'd love your parents to be proud of you. Each time I tried to work in his company, he wasn't impressed. I realized I had to just go and be myself."
She went on to launch another company, Sister, which produced HBO's Chernobyl and BBC’s Broadchurch.
Liz has been married three times and is the mother of four children. Her first marriage was to Elkin Pianim, a fellow Vassar grad, in 1993, The New York Times reported. The pair share two daughters, Cornelia and Anna, whom they welcomed before divorcing in 1998.
She later married Matthew Freud, a British PR executive, in 2001. Likewise, they share two children, Charlotte and Samson. The couple divorced in 2014.

Rupert and Anna welcomed Lachlan Murdoch on Sept. 8, 1971.
Like his older sister, Lachlan was raised in New York. He later graduated from Princeton University with a degree in philosophy, according to The New York Times.
Since his early career days, Lachlan has worked for his father. He has managed newspapers across the United States and Australia, and in 2000, he became the deputy chief operating officer at News Corporation, per his bio on the Fox Corporation website.
In 2003, Lachlan was announced as Rupert’s successor, and he addressed his father in a press release. "We thank him for his vision and his pioneering spirit, his steadfast determination and the enduring legacy he leaves at the companies he founded and countless people he has impacted," it read.
About two years later, Lachlan launched his own company, Illyria Pty, which invested in radio stations. Later, he returned to the family media business, serving as non-executive co-chairman of News Corp and 21st Century Fox, per Bloomberg.
In 1998, Lachlan married Sarah O'Hare, an Australian model. They have three children: Kalan, Aidan and Aerin.

Rupert and Anna welcomed James Murdoch on Dec. 13, 1972.
He was raised in New York with his other siblings and attended Harvard University for a brief time. He dropped out of his program in pursuit of launching his own hip-hop label, Rawkus Records, in 1995, according to The Man Who Owns the News.
Notable artists such as Mos Def and Eminem joined the label's roster, which was acquired by News Corp in 1998, BBC reported. After the acquisition, James continued to work for the company for decades. He became CEO of 21st Century Fox in 2015, per the Los Angeles Times.
In 2020, James resigned from News Corp, saying in a statement, "My resignation is due to disagreements over certain editorial content published by the Company's news outlets and certain other strategic decisions.”
James has a reputation for being more progressive than the other members of his conservative family. Regarding his father, he told The New York Times, "We've been arguing about politics since I was a teenager.”
James married Kathryn Hufschmid in 2000. They are the parents of three children: Anneka, Emerson and Walter.
Grace Murdoch, 24

Grace was raised in New York City and attended The Brearley School on the Upper East Side. She graduated in June 2020 and went on to Yale University.
Grace seems to have a warm relationship with her father. On Rupert’s 90th birthday, she wrote on her Instagram, "I am so lucky to be your daughter." She has also called him her “favorite person."
In recent years, Grace has started to make more red carpet appearances, notably attending the Met Gala in 2024 and 2025 and the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in 2026.
Chloe Murdoch, 22

Like her older sister, she grew up in N.Y.C. After graduating from The Brearley School, she studied at Stanford University.
While her parents have public profiles, Chloe maintains a private life. To wish Chloe a happy 18th birthday, her mother posted on Instagram, calling her “the most wonderful.”
